In »A Ciambra«, a small Romani community in Calabria, Pio Amato is desperate to grow up fast. At 14, he drinks, smokes and is one of the few to easily slide between the region’s factions – the local Italians, the African refugees and his fellow Romani. Pio follows his older brother Cosimo everywhere, learning the necessary skills for life on the streets of their hometown. When Cosimo disappears and things start to go wrong, Pio sets out to prove he’s ready to step into his big brother’s shoes but soon finds himself faced with an impossible decision that will show if he is truly ready to become a man.

Während der Dreharbeiten zum Kurzfilm »A Ciambra<« wurde Regisseur Jonas Carpignano sein Auto samt Equipment von der Romafamilie Amato gestohlen. Mit der Familie wurde über die Rückgabe verhandelt, welche sich aber verzögerte, da das alte Familienoberhaupt des Clans verstarb. Der Regisseur war fasziniert von der lauten, sich mit Diebstählen über Wasser haltenden Sippe und ihrem Credo, daß Blutsbande wichtiger sind als alle Geschäfte. Dabei lernte er auch den frechen vierzehnjährigen Amato kennen, und Carpignano verbrachte viel Zeit mit dem jungen Pio und seinen Angehörigen. Es entstand die Idee, einen Film, mit und über die Familie Amato zu drehen. Für Pio Amato ist dieser quasidokumentarische Film bereits der dritte Film mit Regisseur Carpignano, in dem er nun die Hauptrolle spielt. Mit dabei auch seine Großfamilie, die teilweise ebenfalls sich selber spielen, und weitere Laiendarsteller aus dem Umfeld. Ein beeindruckender Inneneinblick in die Zustände einer Parallelgesellschaft, in der eigene Gesetze herrschen.
